BITUMEN IN DRY LEAN CONCRETE

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A LABORATORY INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECT OF ADDING BITUMEN TO DRY LEAN CONCRETE MIXTURES. THIS INVESTIGATION FORMS PART OF A STUDY OF THE INCIDENCE OF CRACKS IN ROADBASES BUILT WITH DRY LEAN CONCRETE. TEST RESULTS SHOW THAT SUSECPTIBILITY TO CRACKING IS NOT MODIFIED IF 10 TO 20 PER CENT OF THE MIXING WATER IS REPLACED BY A BITUMINOUS EMULSION. IF THE COARSE AGGREGATE PARTICLES ARE PRECOATED WITH A LAYER OF CONCENTRATED BITUMEN, THERE OCCURS A SUBSTANIAL REDUCTION IN COMPRESSIVE AND TENSILE STRENGTH AND IN THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY. /RRL/
