VARIATIONS IN BITUMEN PROPERTIES AS A FUNCTION OF ITS SOLID PARAFFIN CONTENT /IN RUSSIAN/

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF TESTS CARRIED OUT TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF THE TYPE OF SOLID PARAFFIN ON THE RHEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMENS OF VARIOUS STRUCTURES. TESTS WERE CONDUCTED AT TEMPERATURES BETWEEN - 30 DEGREES AND + 80 DEGREES C. TEST RESULTS SHOW THAT (1) THE INFLUENCE OF PARAFFIN ON THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN DEPENDS ON THE STRUCTURE OF THE LATTER, (2) THE INCREASE IN PARAFFIN CONTENT LEADS TO A DECREASE IN DUCTILITY AND IN FRASS BREAKING POINT, WHILE THE SOFTENING AND PENETRATION POINTS DO NOT VARY VERY MUCH, (3) FOR TEMPERATURES ABOVE FREEZING BUT, BELOW THE MELTING POINT OF PARAFFIN, INCREASE IN PARAFFIN CONTENT RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN VISCOSITY, (4) ABOVE THE MELTING POINT OF PARAFFIN, A SHARP DECREASE IN THE VISCOSITY OF PARAFFIN BITUMEN OCCURS; THIS IS PARTICULARLY NOTICEABLE IN BITUMENS OF A WEAK STRUCTURE WITH A LOW ASPHALTENE CONTENT, (5) IN BITUMEN WITH A SUFFICIENTLY HIGH ASPHALTENE CONTENT, AT TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING, INCREASE IN PARAFFIN CONTENT RESULTS IN A DECREASE IN THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF THE BITUMEN, (6) PARAFFIN WITH A RAMIFIED STRUCTURE HAS LESS INFLUENCE THAN LINEAR-STRUCTURE PARAFFIN, (7) ALTHOUGH PARAFFIN DECREASES THE ADHESIVENESS BETWEEN BITUMEN AND AGGREGATES, NO SHARP DECREASE IN THE STABILITY OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE VIS A VIS WATER TAKES PLACE, (8) WHEN THE PARAFFIN CONTENT OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE EXCEEDS 33 PER CENT, ITS COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH IS LOWER THAN THAT OF A SIMILAR BITUMEN WHICH DOES NOT CONTAIN PARAFFIN, AND (9) FOR BITUMEN WITH A LOW ASPHALTENE CONTENT, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT PARAFFIN CONTENT SHOULD NOT EXCEED 3 PER CENT. /LCPC/RRL/
