OBSERVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING THE BITUMINOUS SURFACING OF ENGINEERING STRUCTURES IN GERMANY /IN FRENCH/

DEFORMATIONS, CRACKS, SEPARATION OF LAYERS, AND CORROSION OF THE PLATE SUPPORTING THE CARRIAGEWAY OBSERVED IN BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS OF METAL BRIDGES ARE DESCRIBED, AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE PRESENTED CONCERNING: (1) THE RIGIDITY OF BITUMINOUS COATINGS, (2) PROTECTION OF METAL PARTS AGAINST CORROSION, (3) ROAD BASES (GUSSASPHALT), (4) WEARING COURSES (BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTIES INHERENT TO THE ADDITION OF RUBBER OR ASBESTOS TO BITUMINOUS MIXTURES THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD BE AVOIDED), AND (5) DECK METAL SHEETS AND CONCRETE DECK SURFACINGS (THE COVERING OF THE PUGGING WITH METAL SHEETS IS SATISFACTORY ONLY IF THESE SHEETS ARE NOT DISPLACED DURING COMPACTION BY COMPACTION MACHINERY. IT IS ADVISABLE TO HAVE AN INSULATING LAYER PREVIOUS TO STEAM BETWEEN CONCRETE AND ASPHALTIC CONCRETE). /LCPC/RRL/
