RISE OF BINDER TO THE SURFACE OF AN OPEN-TEXTURED BITUMINOUS MIXTURE /IN FRENCH/

SOME OF THE PHEMOMENA OBSERVED, IN PARTICULAR THE FORMATION OF BUBBLES ON THE SURFACE OF OPEN-TEXTURED BITUMINOUS PATCHES, ARE DESCRIBED. THE BUBBLES APPEAR WHEN A HOT SUNNY SPELL FOLLOWED A WET PERIOD. THE PHENOMENON IS EXPLAINED AS FOLLOWS: COLD RAIN WATER CARRIED HARMFUL FINES INSIDE THE OPEN-TEXTURED BITUMINOUS MIX CAUSING STRIPPING OF THE AGGREGATES AT THE BASE OF THE LAYER. WHEN THE TEMPERATURE OF THE LAYER RISES, THE TENSION OF THE SATURATING VAPOR PRODUCED BY THE WATER UNABLE TO RUN OFF INCREASES INSIDE THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURE AND FORCES THE THE CONCENTRATION OF BINDER ON THE SURFACE. /LCPC/RRL/
