LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE INFLUENCE OF DE-ICING SALTS ON THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS OF A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE (IN GERMAN)

THE TESTS INCLUDED THE EFFECT OF DE-ICING SALTS ON BINDERLESS STONE CHIPPINGS, THE ADHESION OF BITUMEN UNDER THE ACTION OF WATER AND FROST, AND THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SAMPLES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. RESULTS OF THESE TESTS SHOWED CONCLUSIVELY THAT DE-ICING SALTS DO NOT HAVE A HARMFUL EFFECT ON THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS OF A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE. THE OCCURRENCE OF WINTER DAMAGE ON BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACINGS MUST THEREFORE BE TRACED BACK TO THE INFLUENCE OF WATER WHICH HAS PENETRATED INTO THEM, DUE TO INSUFFICIENT COMPACTION AND OPEN SURFACE TEXTURE, AND ALSO TO THE EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC AND SUDDED TIRES. /RRL/
