THE USE OF RUBBER IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES ON GERMAN ROADS /IN FRENCH/

TWO EXPERIMENTAL STRETCHES OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT NEAR WIESBADEN WERE SURFACED WITH BITUMINOUS CARPETS CONTAINING RESPECTIVELY 1 AND 2.5 PER CENT OF LATEX BY WEIGHT OF THE BITUMEN (0.75 AND 1.75 PER CENT RUBBER). THE BEHAVIOR OF THE EXPERIMENTAL STRETCHES WERE COMPARED WITH THAT OF A CONTROL SECTION WITHOUT RUBBER. DURING THE FIRST FIVE YEARS THERE WAS NO GREAT DIFFERENCE IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SECTIONS. LATER, HOWEVER, IT WAS FOUND THAT: (1) CREEP OCCURRED IN THE CONTROL SECTION BUT NOT IN THOSE CONTAINING RUBBER; (2) THE LONGITUDINAL PROFILE OF THE ROAD REMAINED BETTER ON THE SECTION CONTAINING 1 PER CENT OF LATEX THAN ON THE CONTROL SECTION AND EVEN BETTER ON THE SECTION CONTAINING MORE LATEX; AND (3) RESURFACING, NORMALLY CARRIED OUT 5-6 YEARS AFTER LAYING A BITUMINOUS SURFACING COULD BE POSTPONED SEVERAL YEARS WHEN RUBBER WAS ADDED; LONGER WITH HIGHER PROPORTION. /LCPC/RRL/
