MICROBES AS CAUSE OF BITUMINOUS INSULATION DETERIORATION

THE DESTRUCTION OF THE BITUMINOUS INSULATING LAYER OF A STEEL SETTLING TANK IN AN ACTIVATED SLUDGE WATER PURIFICATION PLANT WAS TRACED TO THE ACTION OF AEROBIC BACTERIA. TYPE OF CHANGES IN ASPHALT COMPOSITION, REACTION AND PRODUCTS, AND BACTERIAL ATTACK ON ROAD ASPHALTS AND OTHER BITUMINOUS COATINGS ARE DISCUSSED.
