RECLAIMITE-ASPHALTIC PAVEMENT REJUVENATOR

THE APPLICATION OF RECLAIMITE ON TWO PAVEMENT TEST SITES WAS OBSERVED FOR EVALUATION PURPOSES. RECLAIMITE IS AN EMULSION OF PETROLEUM OILS AND RESINS IN A WATER BASE WHICH ACCORDING TO THE PRODUCERS, THE WITCO CHEMICAL COMPANY, WILL PENETRATE TO A DEPTH OF APPROXIMATELY ONE INCH OR MORE TO REVITALIZE AND REPLASTICIZE WEATHERED ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. CORES WERE TAKEN FROM PAVEMENTS IMMEDIATELY AFTER APPLICATION, BUT NO PENETRATION OF THE MATERIAL COULD BE OBSERVED. INSPECTIONS OF THE CORES TAKEN 3 MONTHS AFTER APPLICATION STILL REVEALED NO VISIBLE INDICATION OF PENETRATION BY THE RECLAIMITE. HOWEVER, IT WAS OBSERVED, THAT BOTH PAVEMENTS HAD SOFTENED SOMEWHAT BECAUSE CRACKS OBSERVED IN THE PAVEMENT INSTEAD OF BEING SQUARE EDGED AND SHARP WERE ROUNDED WHERE TRAFFIC HAD PRESSED THE EDGES DOWN. SKID TESTS WERE ALSO PERFORMED ON THE TEST SECTIONS. RESULTS INDICATED THAT THERE WAS AN APPROXIMATE 25% REDUCTION IN SKID RESISTANCE. FOR THE REASONS STATED, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT RECLAIMITE NOT BE USED BY THE STATE ROADS DEPARTMENT.
