EXPANSION CHARACTERISTICS OF CALCIUM SULFOALUMINATE HYDRATES

LOW-EXPANSION SOLID SOLUTION SURFACE LAYERS FORMED BY CHEMICAL REACTIONS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES WERE USED TO CHEMICALLY STRENGTH ALUMINA AND SPINEL BODIES. SOLID SOLUTIONS IN THE SYSTEM, ALUMINUM CHROMATE, STRENGTHENED ALUMINA, AND SOLID SOLUTIONS IN THE SYSTEM, MAGNESIUM OXIDE ALUMINUM CHROMATE, STRENGTHENED SPINEL. PRIOR TREATMENTS WITH AQUEOUS HYDROFLUORIC ACID WERE USED TO REMOVE INTERGRANULAR MATERIAL AND INCREASE THE THICKNESS OF THE SOLID SOLUTION LAYERS. THE RELATIVE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS, DISTRIBUTION OF THE FLEXURAL STRENGTHS, AND THERMAL SHOCK RESISTANCE OF THE STRENGTHENED MATERIALS WERE INVESTIGATED. /AUTHOR/
