SILICONES IN HOT-MIX' RIGHT QUANTITY IMPORTANT

THE SILICONE MOST WIDELY USED IN HOT-MIX IS THE DOW CORNING 200 FLUID /DC-200/. THE DC-200 HAS NO DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON THE ASPHALT OR THE MIX AND IN SOME CASES MAY IMPROVE RESISTANCE TO RAVELLING. IN GOOD AND INTERMEDIATE AGGREGATE COMPACTED TO 10 TO 14 PERCENT VOIDS, RAVELLING WAS THE SAME FOR SILICONE TREATED ASPHALT AS FOR UNTREATED ASPHALT, EXCEPT SILICONE IMPROVED RESISTANCE OF MIXES MADE WITH ASPHALT A AND THE GOOD AGGREGATE. IN POOR AGGREGATE RAVELLING OCCURRED AT ALL VOID CONTENTS TESTED. THE HIGHER THE VOIDS, THE MORE THE RAVELLING. SILICONE IMPROVED THE RESISTANCE TO RAVELLING OF MIXES MADE WITH THIS ASPHALT AND THE POOR AGGREGATE. LARGE DOSAGES OF DC-200 SHOULD BE AVIODED AS THE MIX MAY BE SOFT AND TENDER.
