RESULTS OF A BITUMINOUS MIX PRODUCTION PROGRAMME FOR THE METZ-THIONVILLE MOTORWAY

THIS ARTICLE GIVES A REPORT OF THE CONTROL CARRIED OUT IN 1964 ON THE PRODUCTION OF BITUMINOUS MIXES FOR THE A-31 MOTORWAY. THE PURPOSE OF THESE CONTROLS WAS TO ENSURE THE QUALITY OF THE MIXES AND TO GAIN A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR BEHAVIOR. THE FIRST PART DESCRIBES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MIXES OBTAINED DURING INITIAL INVESTIGATIONS. TWO FORMULAE WERE ADOPTED: 0/25 FOR THE BINDERS, 0/12.5 FOR THE TEMPORARY WEARING COURSE. THE MIXES EMPLOYED WERE MADE FROM CRUSHED SLAG. THE SECOND PART EXAMINES THE CONTROL AS A WHOLE. AFTER A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE MIXING PLANT, THE AUTHOR GIVES SOME DETAILS OF THE CONTROL OF MIXING. A QUITE DETAILED STUDY OF THE CONDITIONS OF SAMPLING AND THE VALIDITY OF THE VARIOUS METHODS JUSTIFIES THE USE OF THE SAMPLING FRAME. THE METHODOLOGY OF CONTROL /STOCKS, MIXES IN PRODUCTION, MIXES ON THE SITE/ IS BRIEFLY EXPLAINED. THE AUTHOR THEN INDICATES, FOR EACH TYPE OF MIX /FINE LEVELLING MIX, BINDER, AND SURFACE MIX/ THE TONNAGE PRODUCED, THE NUMBER OF TESTS, THE GRANULOMETRIES, AND THE STATISTICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BINDER CONTENT, ALONG WITH THE RESULTS OF MECHANICAL TESTS. THIS SECOND PART CONCLUDES WITH A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF LABORATORY TESTS AND ON-SITE OBSERVATIONS /COMPACTNESS, PERMEABILITY, SLIPPERINESS, ETC./. THE THIRD PART DEALS WITH NEW LABORATORY STUDIES PREPARATORY TO THE 1964-1965 PROGRAM, AND THE CONCLUSIONS DRAWN FROM THESE STUDIES. THE PROPERTIES OF SLAG MIXES SEEM VERY INTERESTING. IN CONCLUSION, THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS THAT SLAG CAN BE A CHOICE MATERIAL FOR MIXES, WHILE EXPRESSING THE HOPE THAT ON THE POINTS WHICH REMAIN TO BE CLARIFIED /COMPACTNESS, RICHNESS MODULE/ INVESTIGATIONS WILL BE UNDERTAKEN JOINTLY BY THE PONTS ET CHAUSSEES AND ROAD-BUILDING CONTRACTORS.
