THE IMPORTANCE OF STONE DUST AS A FILLER IN BITUMINOUS MINERAL COMPOUNDS

THE STABILITY OF BITUMINOUS MIXES DEPENDS PRIMARILY ON THE NATURE AND QUANTITY OF THE FILLER COMPONENT. THE REQUIRED PERCENTAGE DECREASES WITH INCREASING MAXIMUM GRAIN SIZE IN THE CASE OF GRADED MIXES AND CAN, AS IS ALSO EXPLAINED IN DETAIL, BE DETERMINED BY THE MORTAR THEORY OR BY THE FULLER EQUATION. THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ARE GIVEN. GOOD /E.G. LIMESTONE/ FILLERS ARE FREE FROM CLAY COMPONENT, WELL-SIZED /0.006/0.09 MM/ AND WITHOUT SAND. THEIR SURFACE AREA /300-4,000 CM SQUARED/G/ DETERMINES THE BINDER REQUIREMENT. THIS CAN BE DETERMINED THEORETICALLY AND EMPIRICALLY /BY OIL FILM TEST/. /FG/RRL/
