GERMAN EXPERIENCE WITH RUBBERISED ASPHALT. A ROAD TRAIL SHOWS THE BENEFITS OF RUBBER ADDITION

TWO EXPERIMENTAL LENGTHS, EACH ABOUT 200 M LONG WERE LAID, BOTH CONTAINING LATEX /STANDARD REVERTEX/ WHICH WAS SPRAYED INTO THE MIXER. THE FIRST CONTAINED 1 PER CENT OF LATEX /I.E. ABOUT 3/4 PER CENT OF RUBBER/ WHILE THE SECOND CONTAINED 2 1/2 PER CENT OF LATEX / 1 3/4 PER CENT OF RUBBER/. THESE QUANTITIES WERE BASED ON THE WEIGHT OF BITUMEN IN THE SURFACING MATERIAL. DETAILS OF MIXING AND LAYING ARE GIVEN TOGETHER WITH THE RESULTS OF INSPECTION, WHICH INDICATE THAT WHILE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN NECESSARY TO ADJOINING NORMAL ROAD SURFACES THE RUBBERIZED SURFACES ARE STILL FREE FROM MAINTENANCE AFTER FIVE YEARS. ALTHOUGH OFFERING NO PROOF OF THE SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS, ACCIDENT RECORDS SHOW THAT OF THE LARGE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS ON THE ROAD SINCE 1958 NONE HAVE OCCURRED ON THE TRAIL STRETCHES. /RRL/
