FATIGUE OF ASPHALT ROAD MIXTURES

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION HAVE RESULTED IN THE APPLICATION OF THEORETICAL STRESS ANALYSIS TO THE ROAD STRUCTURE AS A WHOLE TO DETERMINE THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRESS IN THE VARIOUS LAYERS OF THE STRUCTURE. IN ORDER TO APPLY THE RESULTS OF THIS TYPE OF ANALYSIS TO DESIGN IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE INFORMATION ON THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIALS WHICH ARE USED TO CONSTRUCT THE DIFFERENT LAYERS OF THE PAVEMENT, AND ONE ASPECT OF THIS IS THE FLEXURAL FATIQUE PROPERTIES OF THE ASPHALT WEARING COURSE. THIS ARTICLE COMPARES THE RESULTS OF LABORATORY FATIQUE TESTS ON ASPHALT MIXES AS USED IN GREAT BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES.
