VISCOSITY MEASUREMENTS

THE VISCOMETER CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES ACCORDING TO THE METHOD USED TO CAUSE THE LIQUID FLOW' EITHER BY GRAVITY /CAPILLARY AND FALLING BALL VISCOMETERS/ OR BY EXTERNAL FORCES IN THE LATTER CASE, THE LIQUID IS SHEARED BETWEEN TWO SURFACES IN RELATIVE MOTION, WHICH CAN BE TWO PLANES /STANHOPE-SETA VISCOMETER/, TWO CYLINDERS /HAACKE ROTOVISKO/, OR A PLANE AND A CONE /KEPES AND H.B.A. VISCOMETERS/. THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF THE BLACK BINDERS AND THE DISTURBING EFFECTS /RAND EFFECT, KINETIC ENERGY EFFECT, WEISSEBBERG EFFECT, TURBULENT FLOW, THIXOTROPHY, HEAT DEVELOPMENT DURING MEASUREMENTS, DEGRADATION THROUGH THERMAL HYSTERESIS ARE DISCUSSED.
