VARIATIONS IN BITUMINOUS HOT-MIX PLANT OPERATION

THE VARIATIONS DURING OPERATION OF A NUMBER OF BITUMINOUS HOT-MIX PLANTS HAVE BEEN SURVEYED. THE VARIATIONS SURVEYED INCLUDE TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PLANT, THE MOISTURE CONTENT OF THE DRIED AND UNDRIED AGGREGATES AND VARIATIONS IN COMPOSITION OF THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURE. THE EFFECT OF THESE VARIATIONS ON THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE FINISHED PAVEMENT IS DISCUSSED. THE EFFECT OF ASPHALT CONTENT VARIATIONS WHICH HAD A MEAN STANDARD DEVIATION OF 0.25 PERCENT AND SAND CONTENT VARIATIONS WHICH HAD A STANDARD DEVIATION OF 2.8 PERCENT ON SPECIFICATIONS GOVERNING THE FINISHED BITUMINOUS MIXTURE IS DISCUSSED AND SUGGESTIONS ARE GIVEN FOR SETTING MORE REASONABLE AND MEANING SPECIFICATIONS. /NAPA/
