DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN OF REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR MOVABLE BRIDGES

THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE INVESTIGATION OF THE FEASIBILITY OF PROVIDING A SYSTEM OF AUTOMATION FOR THE MOVABLE SPANS OF A BRIDGE. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM AND THE SEQUENCE OF ITS OPERATION IS DESCRIBED. IN ADDITION TO NAVIGATION LIGHTS, THE BRIDGES ARE EQUIPPED WITH A SYSTEM OF WHITE AND AMBER (ACKNOWLEDGING AND WARNING) LIGHTS. THE USE OF ELECTRICALLY OPERATED COMPRESSOR TYPE AIR TRUMPETS, DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONES, AND TWO HIGH RESOLUTION TELEVISION CAMERAS ARE DESCRIBED. THE SYSTEM ALSO INCORPORATES A BOAT-DETECTOR DEVICE, AND A 4-CHANNEL FM RADIO FOR DIRECT VOICE COMMUNICATION USE BY THE DISPATCHER. THE TOTAL COST OF THE CONTROL SYSTEM IS $27,000.
