THE NEW FRANKLIN FALLS BRIDGE IN SNOQUALMIE PASS, WASH. IS 700 FT. LONG, CROSSING A CHRONIC AVALANCHE ZONE. AN AVALANCHE ROOF WAS REJECTED IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THE SCENIC BEAUTY. TO AVOID A LARGE NUMBER OF MASSIVE AND UNSIGHTLY PIERS IT WAS DECIDED TO BUILD ONE BIG PIER WHERE AN OUTCROPPING WOULD SHIELD IT. SELF-PAINTING STEEL WAS USED WHICH RUSTS TO AN EARTHY COLOR, PROTECTED BY ITS COOPER CONTENT DETAILS OF CONSTRUCTION ARE GIVEN. /WC/
