NOISE ABATEMENT ON BRIDGES

NOISE MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE ON A TOTAL OF 20 RAILWAY BRIDGES; THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN AND MODE OF TRACK LAYING OF THESE VARYING GREATLY. THESE MEASUREMENTS COVERED DIFFERENT SUPPORTING STRUCTURES, VARIOUS DECKS (STEEL, CONCRETE) AND TRACK LAID ON WOODEN SLEEPERS IN A BALLAST BED OR STEEL RAIL BEARERS, AND ALSO RAILS LAID DIRECTLY ON STEEL AND CONCRETE DECKS OR ON STEEL GIRDERS. AS SHOWN BY THE MEASUREMENTS, STEEL BRIDGES WITH DIRECT BALLAST-FREE TRACK LAYING PRODUCE SOUND LEVELS IN THE VICINITY OF THE SOURCE UP TO 19 DB (A) HIGHER THAN THOSE MEASURED ON A STEEL BRIDGE WITH CONCRETE DECK AND WOODEN SLEEPERED TRACK ON BALLAST BED (MASS EFFECT).
