COMPOSITE BRIDGE DECK CONSTRUCTION USING STEEL HOLLOW TRAPEZOIDAL GIRDERS

THE DESIGN BACKGROUND FOR TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRIDGE DECK IS OUTLINED. THE FIRST IS FOR A SINGLE BOX- GIRDER 120-FOOT SPAN SIMPLY SUPPORTED ACCOMMODATION BRIDGE; THE SECOND IS A TRIPLE BOX-GIRDER 60-FOOT SPAN CONTINUOUS ROAD BRIDGE, WHICH IS USED BOTH FOR TWO AND FOUR SPAN CROSSINGS OF THE HIGHWAY. THE REASONS FOR PREPARING THE DESIGNS ARE GIVEN ALONG WITH THEIR FORM DESCRIPTIONS AND CONSTRUCTION MADE. BOTH TYPES ARE WEB SLOPES OF APPROXIMATELY 45 DEG TO FORM STRUCTURAL TROUGH-SECTION GIRDERS. STEEL MEMBRANES ARE PROVIDED TO SEAL THE TOPS OF THE TROUGHS AND SUPPORT THE WET DECK CONCRETE. THE MEMBRANES ARE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE PART OF THE OVERALL STRENGTH OF THE DECK CONCRETE OR OF THE GIRDER. THE VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS OF BOTH FORMS OF DECK ARE DISCUSSED. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF MODEL TESTS USED TO ASSIST WITH PREDICTION OF STRESS EFFECTS FROM THE MEMBRANE SYSTEM. COMPUTER ANALYSIS HANDLING OF THE THREE BOX-GIRDER DECK FOR DESIGN FORCES IN THE SLAB AND GIRDERS IS DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
