EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT OF FRESH CONCRETE BY HIGH FREQUENCY EXCITED SCREW-TYPE AUGER

THE ORIGINAL PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY, BASED UPON PREVIOUS INVESTIGATION, WAS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF THE APPLICATION DURING THE MIXING PHASE OF SONIC ENERGY TO CONCRETE OF CONVENTIONAL OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS DESIGN UPON THE COMPRESSIVE AND FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF SUCH CONCRETE. A SECONDARY OBJECTIVE WAS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF SONIC ENERGY INTRODUCED INTO SUCH PLASTIC CONCRETE UPON THE CONCRETE'S RESISTANCE TO FREEZING AND THAWING AND, IN THE CASE OF AIR-ENTRAINED CONCRETE, UPON THE AIR-VOID SYSTEM. IN THE EARLY MONTHS OF THE STUDY IT WAS FOUND THAT LITTLE CONSISTENT EFFECT COULD BE OBTAINED THROUGH USE OF THE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE, AND THE WORK PLAN WAS REVISED TO PERMIT EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF INTRODUCING SONIC ENERGY INTO PLASTIC MORTAR WHICH WAS THEN REMIXED WITH APPROPRIATE QUANTITIES OF COARSE AGGREGATE TO PRODUCE CONCRETE COMPLYING WITH OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS SPECIFICATIONS. TESTS PERFORMED INCLUDED 7- AND 28-DAY COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF MORTAR CUBES, WITH AND WITHOUT SONIC ENERGY; 7- AND 28-DAY COMPRESSIVE AND FLEXURAL STRENGTHS OF CONCRETE MADE FROM BOTH AIR-ENTRAINED AND NON AIR-ENTRAINED MORTARS, WITH AND WITHOUT SONIC ENERGY; RESISTANCE TO FREEZING AND THAWING FOR ALL TYPES OF CONCRETE ABOVE; AND PARAMETERS OF THE AIR-VOID SYSTEM FOR ALL TYPES. RESULTS OF THESE TESTS SHOWED THAT ALTHOUGH INTRODUCTION OF HIGH LEVELS OF SONIC ENERGY AT A FREQUENCY IN THE ORDER OF 10 KHZ INTO PORTLAND CEMENT MORTARS COVERING A WIDE RANGE OF WATER CONTENTS INVARIABLY RESULTED IN INCREASED MORTAR STRENGTH AT 7 AND 28 DAYS, THIS EFFECT WAS NOT APPARENT WHEN MORTAR SO TREATED WAS REMIXED WITH COARSE AGGREGATE TO PRODUCE CONCRETE. NO APPARENTLY SIGNIFICANT EFFECT OF THE TREATMENT UPON CONCRETE STRENGTH, DURABILITY OR AIR-VOID SYSTEM WAS FOUND. /AUTHOR/
