EVALUATION OF THE KELLY BALL AND MODIFIED BALL PENETRATION DEVICES AS A MEASURE OF CONCRETE CONSISTENCY

PREVIOUSLY DETERMINED REQUIREMENTS ON THE NEED FOR CLOSER CONTROL OF PLASTIC CONCRETE PRIOR TO ITS PLACEMENT LED TO THE EVALUATION OF METHODS WHICH MIGHT YEILD SATISFACTORY JOB CONTROL INFORMATION AND CORRELATE TO STANDARD TEST PROCEDURES. THE USE OF THE BALL PENETRATION DEVICE AND A SIMPLE MODIFICATION OF THAT DEVICE WERE LOGICAL TARGETS OF SUCH AN INVESTIGATION. AN EVALUATION PROGRAM WAS SET UP WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF TWO STATE HIGHWAY DISTRICTS AND THEIR PROJECT ENGINEERS AND A NUMBER OF MATERIALS AND TESTS DIVISION FIELD OFFICES IN VARIOUS PRESTRESS PLANTS TO PERFORM COMPARATIVE TESTS BY THE THREE METHODS, STANDARD SLUMP CONE, KELLY BALL AND THE MODIFIED BALL. RESULTS WERE THEN EVALUATED STATISTICALLY AND PLOTTED TO YIELD GRAPHIC AS WELL AS MATHEMATICAL EVALUATIONS. THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION WERE COMPLETELY NEGATIVE AS FAR AS THE USE OF SINGLE READINGS WITH THE PENETRATION DEVICES AND GAVE FURTHER SUPPORT TO THE USE OF THE STANDARD SLUMP CONE WHICH IS NOT ONLY MORE VALID BUT ALSO THE LEAST EXPENSIVE AND TIME CONSUMING.
