BOND OF UNTENSIONED PRESTRESS STRAND

THE BOND BEHAVIOR OF UNTENSIONED PRESTRESSING STRAND WAS STUDIED TO EVALUATE LOAD-DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS AS WELL AS LOAD-EMBEDMENT REQUIREMENTS. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY ARE PRIMARILY FOR APPLICATION TO CONTINUITY CONNECTIONS FOR PRECAST PRESTRESSED BRIDGE BEAMS. THREE STRAND CONFIGURA- TIONS WERE STUDIED; STRAIGHT, FRAYED AND BENT 90 DEGREE OVER A REINFORCING BAR. EQUATIONS WERE DEVELOPED WHICH RELATE SLIP TO APPLIED STEEL STRESS FOR EACH CONFIGURATION. IT WAS DEMONSTRATED THAT EQUATIONS RELATING SLIP TO NOMINAL BOND STRESS ARE SIMPLY A TRANSFORMATION OF THE BASIC STEEL STRESS EQUATION. DESIGN EQUATIONS WERE ALSO DEVELOPED WHICH RELATE THE EMBEDMENT LENGTH NECESSARY TO INSURE AGAINST GENERAL SLIPPAGE FOR A GIVEN STEEL STRESS. THE INFLUENCE OF STRAND DIAMETER, CONCRETE STRENGTH AND CONTAINMENT REINFORCING WERE ALSO STUDIED AND FOUND TO BE OF LITTLE CONSEQUENCE.
