COATED CHIPPINGS IN ROLLED ASPHALT: A FULL-SCALE ROAD EXPERIMENT ON NATIONAL ROUTE N.1 NORTH OF CASTLEBELLINGHAM, COUNTY LOUTH

THIS REPORT GIVES DETAILS OF A FULL-SCALE ROAD EXPERIMENT BEGUN IN OCTOBER, 1970, ON NATIONAL ROUTE N.1 NORTH OF CASTLEBELLINGHAM, COUNTY LOUTH, TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF THE RATE OF SPREAD OF COATED CHIPPINGS ON THE RESISTANCE TO SKIDDING AND GENERAL PERFORMANCE OF ROLLED-ASPHALT WEARING COURSES. THE EXPERIMENT CONSISTS OF SIX SECTIONS OF ROLLED ASPHALT TO WHICH COATED CHIPPINGS WERE APPLIED AT VARYING RATES OF SPREAD. THE SURFACINGS ARE BEING KEPT UNDER OBSERVATION AND THEIR PERFORMANCES ASSESSED. MEASUREMENTS OF THEIR RESISTANCE TO SKIDDING AND OF SURFACE TEXTURE DEPTH WILL BE CARRIED OUT REGULARLY. /AUTHOR/TRRL/
