ANISOTROPIC AND NON-LINEAR CHARACTERIZATION OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES (PART 1)

RECENT RESEARCH HAS SUGGESTED THAT THE ANISOTROPIC AND NON-LINEAR CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS MAY ALSO BE SIGNIFICANT IN RELATION TO THEIR ESTABLISHED DEPENDENCY ON TIME OF LOADING AND TEMPERATURE. THIS REPORT REVIEWS CURRENT INFORMATION ON THESE ASPECTS OF MATERIAL BEHAVIOUR AND PRESENTS A THEORY CONDUCIVE TO THE MECHANICAL REPRESENTATION OF THE MATERIAL BY MEANS OF EITHER A COMPLIANCE CONSTITUTIVE EQUATION OR BY THE STIFFNESS CONSTITUTIVE EQUATION, WHICH IS MORE AMENABLE TO MATHEMATICAL TREATMENT, BY CONSIDERATION OF THE PROPAGATION OF ULTRASONIC WAVES THROUGH THE MATERIAL. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE TWO METHODS OF REPRESENTATION IS ESTABLISHED AND THE PHYSICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE COEFFICIENTS IS COMPREHENSIVELY EXPLAINED. METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE STIFFNESS AND COMPLIANCE COEFFICIENTS ARE SUGGESTED, WHICH COMBINE ULTRASONIC TEST TECHNIQUES WITH STANDARD TEST METHODS SUCH AS TRIAXIAL OR UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION AND TENSILE TESTS (A).
