EVALUATION OF BITUMINOUS SURFACES USING FINER AGGREGATES

TO DETERMINE IF BITUMINOUS SURFACES CONSTRUCTED WITH AGGREGATE OUTSIDE PRESENT MHD SPECIFICATION LIMITS WILL PERFORM ADEQUATELY ON LOW TRAFFIC SECONDARY ROADS, PROJECTS WERE CONSTRUCTED IN THREE COUNTIES WITH APPROPRIATE MODIFICATIONS IN THE MHD 2331 BITUMINOUS SURFACING SPECIFICATION AND EVALUATED BY VISUAL OBSERVATIONS. WEAR RESISTANCE WAS THE PRIMARY MEASURE OF ACCEPTABILITY FOR WEARING COURSES CONSTRUCTED WITH FINER AGGREGATES. TRAIL-MIX LABORATORY TESTS, DESCRIPTION OF SURFACED ROADWAYS PRIOR TO AND AFTER OVERLAY AND PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS ARE DESCRIBED. THE KOOCHICHING COUNTY PROJECT CONSISTED OF A 3-MILE SECTION OF TWO-LANE ROADWAY SUBDIVIDED INTO THREE ONE-MILE-LONG SEGMENTS. THE FINER AGGREGATE MIX WAS ALSO USED FOR RESURFACING THREE 2-LANE ROADWAYS IN PINE COUNTY AND FOUR TEST SECTIONS IN TWO-LANE ROADWAYS IN WASECA COUNTY. PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORDS OF PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS ARE PRESENTED. ALL PRELIMINARY INDICATIONS ARE THAT BITUMINOUS SURFACES CONSTRUCTED WITH AGGREGATES FINER THAN ALLOWED IN MHD SPECIFICATION 2331 ARE PERFORMING SATISFACTORILY ON THE RELATIVELY LOW TRAFFIC VOLUME ROADS. IN AREAS WHERE HIGHER-QUALITY AGGREGATE IS IN SHORT SUPPLY, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THESE FINER AGGREGATES BE USED TO REDUCE CONSTRUCTION COSTS ON LOW-TRAFFIC ROADS. FINAL CONCLUSIONS MUST AWAIT PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS OF THE ROADWAYS OVER A FURTHER TOW TO THREE YEARS.
