USE OF MINERAL FILLER TO IMPROVE POOR AGGREGATE FOR PLANT MIX PAVEMENT

LABORATORY TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON VARIOUS ASPHALT-MINERAL FILLER-AGGREGATE MIXTURES. RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR SPECIMENS TESTED BY THE HVEEM RELATIVE STABILITY TEST, THE MOISTURE VAPOR SUSCEPTIBILITY TEST, THE MINNESOTA COLD WATER ABRASION TEST, AND THE IMMERSION-COMPRESSION TEST. HYDRATED LIME, PORTLAND CEMENT AND LIMESTONE DUST ALL HAVE MERIT AS MINERAL FILLERS AND CAN BE USED TO IMPROVE POOR AGGREGATE. CONSTANT FILLER-ASPHALT RATIO SPECIMENS PROVIDE ERRATIC INDEX OF RETAINED STRENGTH VALUES AND THUS SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN FURTHER CONSIDERATION. THE PRESENT IMMERSION-COMPRESSION TEST NEEDS TO BE MODIFIED. /AUTHOR/
