A NEW METHOD OF DETERMINING THE PORE CONTENT OF COMPACTED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES, AND ITS USE IN DESIGNING THE BINDER CONTENT OF ROLLED ASPHALT SURFACINGS

BASED ON THE MARSHALL METHOD, A NEW TEST METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN WHICH THE COMPACTION FACTOR CORRESPONDS TO THE COMPACTNESS OF THE ROCK CONTENT IN THE SPECIMEN OF MIX. STATISTICAL EVALUATION GIVES ADEQUATELY ACCURATE RESULTS UP TO A MAXIMUM PARTICLE SIZE OF 18 MM. THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE ERROR IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE BINDER CONTENT IS GIVEN AS 0.3 PERCENT BY WEIGHT, BUT AS A RULE THIS WILL BE SMALLER. SUGGESTIONS ARE ALSO MADE FOR THE DETERMINATION BY THIS METHOD OF THE BINDER CONTENT OF COARSE MIXES AND ASPHALTS. A NOMOGRAM HELPS IN THE AVOIDANCE OF ERRORS IN CALCULATION. THE METHOD IS BASED ON THE MACHINES GENERALLY USED IN ANY ASPHALT WORK AND TAKES LITTLE TIME, SO THAT SHORT-TERM CORRECTIONS TO THE MIX ARE POSSIBLE. /FG-RRL/
