INVESTIGATION OF LIME SLURRY TO CONTROL ABSORPTIVE AGGREGATES USED IN ASPHALT CONCRETE

DETAILS OF AN INVESTIGATION OF THE USE OF LIME-SLURRY USED AS AN ADDITIVE TO ASPHALT CONCRETE TO CONTROL EXCESSIVE EXPANSION ARE PRESENTED. VARIOUS TESTS AND MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE BOTH IN THE FIELD AND LABORATORY ON THE MATERIALS USED. TESTS INCLUDED STABILITY, COHESION, SPECIFIC GRAVITY, IMMERSION COMPRESSION, ABSON RECOVERY AND DEFLECTION. YEARLY CONDITION SURVEYS WERE ALSO MADE. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT LIME-SLURRY TREATMENT OF EXPANSIVE ASPHALT CONCRETE AGGREGATE WILL REDUCE PREMATURE PAVEMENT CRACKING OF THE TYPE THAT HAS OCCURRED IN NORTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA. /FHWA/
