FINGERPRINTING OF HIGHWAY ASPHALTS. A METHOD FOR CATALOGING AND IDENTIFYING ASPHALTS

A SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO CATALOGUE RESEARCH RESULTS ON HIGHWAY ASPHALTS WHICH MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO MONITOR RESEARCH AND TO CORRELATE RESULTS FROM DIVERSE STUDIES. THIS SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A DATA BANK OF AVAILABLE ANALYTICAL INFORMATION AND OF THREE SETS OF PARAMETERS TO BE USED IN SEARCHING THE DATA BANK FOR INFORMATION ON NEW ASPHALTS. DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS AND LATITUDES IN RANGES ARE REQUIRED TO CLASSIFY AN ASPHALT AS TO EXPECTED BEHAVIOR. LESS STRINGENT CHARACTERISTICS ARE USED TO DEFINE THE BEHAVIOR INDEPENDENT OF ORIGIN; MORE STRINGENT RANGES ARE USED TO ASSURE EQUAL PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALTS OF DIFFERENT COMPOSITION. THE FINGERPRINTS OF AN ASPHALT ARE DESIGNED TO DETECT RESEMBLANCE OF SPECIMENS CLOSE ENOUGH TO CLASSIFY THEM AS ORIGINALLY IDENTICAL. THE FINGERPRINTS DIFFER FROM THE IDENTITY PARAMETERS PRINCIPALLY IN THAT THE RANGES OF THE NUMERICAL VALUES ARE WIDER, ALLOWING FOR EFFECTS OF SHELF AGING AND SAMPLE MANIPULATION. IT WAS DEMONSTRATED THAT ASPHALTS MATCHING IN THE SELECTED BEHAVIOR CHARACTERISTICS ARE EQUIVALENT FOR PRACTICAL PURPOSES AS MEASURED BY PERFORMANCE TESTS. DIFFERENCES IN BEHAVIOR CAN BE EXPLAINED AND PREDICTED FROM DIFFERENCES IN THE NUMERICAL VALUES OF THE PARAMETERS. THE SYSTEM WAS VERIFIED AND TESTED. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE CHOSEN PARAMETERS, IF USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DATA BANK CARD FILE, IS A PRACTICAL TOOL FOR PREDICTING PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALTS FROM A LIMITED NUMBER OF LABORATORY TESTS. /AUTHOR/
