AN OPTIMIZATION APRROACH TO VISCOUS DAMPING STRUCTURES

A MEANS OF PROVIDING OPTIMAL DAMPING TO AN ELASTIC STRUCTURE IS DESCRIBED. VISCOUS DAMPING ELEMENTS ARE CONSIDERED IN PARTICULAR AND A FUNDAMENTAL CRITERION FOR OPTIMUM DAMPING IS DERIVED. USING THIS CRITERION, THE OPTIMUM VISCOUS PROPERTIES OF THE ELEMENTS ARE DETERMINED DIRECTLY IN RELATION TO THE ELASTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STRUCTURE, AND ARE PRESENTED AS SIMPLE FORMULAE FOR DESIGN. AN EXPRESSION FOR THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BEARINGS IS ALSO DERIVED, AND MAY BE USED INDIRECTLY TO SELECT THEIR OPTIMAL LOCATIONS. POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS INCLUDE DAMPING OF BUILDINGS, BRIDGES, AND THEIR COMPONENTS UNDER EXCITATION FROM WIND, TRAFFIC, MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL MACHINERY, AND EARTHQUAKES. /AUTHOR/
