A FURTHER AERODYNAMIC INVESTIGATION FOR THE PROPOSED HUMBER SUSPENSION BRIDGE

THE SECTIONAL-MODEL METHOD OF TEST WAS USED TO PREDICT THE AEROELASTIC BEHAVIOR OF PROPOSED DESIGNS OF THE HUMBER SUSPENSION BRIDGE STRUCTURE. CRITICAL WIND SPEEDS FOR CLASSICAL-FLUTTER INSTABILITY ARE COMPARED WITH VALUES OBTAINED USING FLAT-PLATE DERIVATIVES. TIME-AVERAGE WIND FORCES WERE MEASURED FOR TWO DESIGNS AND ALSO ON MODELS OF PROPOSED DESIGNS OF THE TOWERS. THE MEASUREMENTS ON THE MODEL TOWERS WERE MADE IN A SHEARED WIND STREAM. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE FORCES MEASURED IN A SHEARED STREAM CAN BE DEDUCED FROM THE MEASUREMENTS IN UNIFORM FLOW. /TRRL/
