FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF ALUMINUM ALLOY WELDMENTS

A RESEARCH STUDY WAS CONDUCTED WHICH INCLUDED: (1) ACCUMULATION OF ALL AVAILABLE FATIGUE DATA ON WELDED ALUMINUM; (2) ANALYSIS OF THESE DATA; (3) PREPARATION OF A REPORT INDICATING THE PRESENT STATE OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD; AND (4) RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH. THIS SUMMARY PAPER GIVES AN OVERVIEW OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THAT STUDY. THE RESULTS REPORTED INCLUDED TESTS OF 21 DIFFERENT ALLOYS (OR FOREIGN ALLOY EQUIVALENTS) WITH 40 DIFFERENT HEAT TREATMENTS AND TEMPERS. THE ALLOYS INCLUDE TWO FROM THE 2000 SERIES, ONE FROM THE 3000 SERIES, EIGHT FROM THE 5000 SERIES, FOUR FROM THE 600 SERIES, AND SIX FROM THE 7000 SERIES. ABOUT 300 DIFFERENT REPORTS AND PAPERS WERE REVIEWED, AND OVER 400 TEST SERIES WITH ABOUT 7000 INDIVIDUAL TESTS WERE ANALYZED IN PREPARATION FOR THE STUDY. DATA FROM THE APPLICABLE STUDIES WERE SUMMARIZED SO THAT AN INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS OF ALL DATA COULD BE CONDUCTED. ABOUT 1955, WIDESPREAD USE OF GAS-METAL-ARC (GMA, FORMERLY MIG) AND GAS-TUNGSTEN-ARC (GMA, FORMERLY TIG) WELDING BEGAN. THUS, IT WAS FELT THAT THE LITERATURE REVIEW AND DATA SUMMARY SHOULD BE LIMITED TO RESEARCH CONDUCTED SINCE THAT DATE SO THAT RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATIONS WOULD BE AN INDICATION OF CURRENT WELDING PRACTICE. FURTHERMORE, THE INVESTIGATION WAS LIMITED TO BUTT-WELDED AND FILLET-WELDED JOINT TYPES.
