INTERPRETATIVE STUDIES OF FORMULAS AND COMPUTER PROGRAMS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF BRIDGE FLOOR SYSTEMS

EXACT FORMULAS ARE PRESENTED AND NUMERICALLY ILLUSTRATED FOR THE ELASTIC ANALYSIS OF A VARIETY OF BRIDGE DECKS IN THE SLAB-STRINGER AND SLAB-STRINGER- DIAPHRAGM CATEGORIES. THE ANALYSES ARE COMPLETELY GENERAL WITH RESPECT TO LOADING BUT REQUIRE THAT THE LOAD FUNCTION BE RESOLVED INTO COEFFICIENTS OF A TRIGONOMETRIC SERIES. FOR THE CASE OF SIMPLY SUPPORTED ORTHOTROPIC PANELS, RATIONALLY BASED AND HIGHLY ACCURATE APPROXIMATE FORMULAS ARE GIVEN IN A FORM SUITABLE FOR SLIDE RULE OR DESK CALCULATOR USE. FOR BOTH THE SLAB-STRINGER (OR RIBBED PLATE) AND SLAB- STRINGER-DIAPHRAGM SYSTEMS, FORMULAS ARE SHOWN FOR THREE TYPES OF MODELS, 1) THE NON-COMPOSITE FLEXURAL MODEL,2) THE COMPOSITE MEMBRANE MODEL AND 3) THE MOST GENERAL COMPOSITE MEMBRANE-FLEXURAL MODEL. THE FORMULAS ARE SUITABLE FOR DESIGN OFFICE USE AND REPRESENT SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS OVER THE EMPIRICAL "EQUIVALENT ORTHOTROPIC CONTINUUM" AND THE APPROXIMATE FINITE ELEMENT METHODS FREQUENTLY USED FOR SUCH STRUCTURES. A GENERAL PURPOSE COMPUTER PROGRAM IS DESCRIBED FOR A COMPOSITE MEMBRANE-FLEXURAL ANALYSIS OF THE SLAB-STRINGER-DIAPHRAGM MODEL. THE PROGRAM CAN ALSO BE MODIFIED, THROUGH USE OF SPECIAL INPUT DATA, FOR A NONCOMPOSITE ANALYSIS OR FOR REVIEW OF RIBBED PLATE DECKS. THE PROGRAM IS CHARACTERIZED BY 1) A SMALL AMOUNT OF REQUIRED INPUT DATA, 2) LOW COMPUTING TIME, AND 3) OUTPUT WHICH PROVIDES A FULL DESCRIPTION OF DECK RESPONSE TO THE GIVEN LOADINGS. FOR ALL BUT THE MOST GENERAL CASE, THE FORMULAS CAN BE EASILY ADOPTED FOR USE WITH THE RECENTLY AVAILABLE PROGRAMMABLE DESK CALCULATORS. /AUTHOR/
