HANDBOOK ON THE UNIFIED CODE FOR STRUCTURAL CONCRETE (CP 110:1972)

DURING THE PREPARATION OF THE UNIFIED CODE, AS CP 110 WAS KNOWN FOR SOME YEARS, DRAFTING COMMITTEES WERE SUPPLIED WITH A CONSIDERABLE VOLUME OF MATERIAL BY THE VARIOUS SERVICING PANELS OF THE INSTITUTION OF STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS, BY THE BUILDING RESEARCH STATION, AND BY THE CEMENT AND CONCRETE ASSOCIATION. IT VERY SOON BECAME APPARENT THAT THE INCLUSION OF ALL THE MATERIAL WOULD NOT ONLY LENGTHEN THE CODE UNDULY BUT ALSO THAT MUCH OF THE MATERIAL WOULD BE MORE APPROPRIATE IN A HANDBOOK. THE COMMITTEES WELCOMED THE OFFER OF THE CEMENT AND CONCRETE ASSOCIATION TO UNDERTAKE THE PREPARATION AND PUBLICATION OF A COMPANION HANDBOOK TO THE PRESENT CODE 110. THE ARRANGEMENT PROVED ADVANTAGEOUS ON A LARGE NUMBER OF OCCASIONS WHEN, AFTER LENGTHY DISCUSSIONS IN THE COMMITTEE, OPINION WAS DIVIDED ON THE DESIRABILITY OF INCLUDING PROPOSALS IN THE CODE, AND IT WAS POSSIBLE TO RECOMMEND THAT THE MATTERS IN QUESTION SHOULD BE TREATED IN THE HANDBOOK. /CODE COMMITTEE/
