TESTS ON SLAB ELEMENTS AND SKEW SLAB BRIDGES DESIGNED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FACTORED ELASTIC MOMENT FIELD

THE THEORETICAL WORK OF VARIOUS AUTHORS ON THE PROVISION OF REINFORCEMENT IN SLABS IN ACCORDANCE WITH A PREDETERMINED MOMENT FIELD IS COMBINED AND PRESENTED IN A FORM MOST SUITABLE FOR THE DESIGN OF SLAB BRIDGES. IN ORDER TO VALIDATE CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE THEORY, TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON FIVE RECTANGULAR SLAB ELEMENTS UNDER UNIAXIAL BENDING. THE BEHAVIOR OF THESE WAS ADEQUATELY PREDICTED BY THE THEORY. IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE SUITABILITY OF THE THEORY FOR SLAB BRIDGE DESIGN, TESTS WERE ALSO CARRIED OUT ON FOUR MODEL 45 DEGREES SKEW SLAB BRIDGES, DESIGNED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FACTORED ELASTIC MOMENT FIELD, UNDER SIMULATED HIGHWAY LOADING. TWO DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENTS OF THE REINFORCEMENT WERE ADOPTED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE THEORY RESULTS IN A SLAB BRIDGE DESIGN WHICH SATISFIES THE LIMIT STATE OF COLLAPSE. THE LIMIT STATE OF SERVICEABILITY IS ALSO SATISFIED, PROVIDED THE REINFORCEMENT IS PLACED IN DIRECTIONS WHICH ARE AS NEAR AS IS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE TO THE PRINCIPAL MOMENT DIRECTIONS. FOR OTHER ARRANGEMENTS OF REINFORCEMENT, CRACKING COULD BE THE CRITICAL LIMIT STATE. /AUTHOR/
