JOINTS FASTENED BY HUCKBOLTS

THE STUDY OBJECTIVE WAS THE DETERMINATION OF SLIP CHARACTERISTICS OF DOUBLE LAP JOINTS FASTENED WITH HIGH- STRENGTH HUCKBOLTS. SEVENTY-EIGHT SPECIMENS WERE TESTED BY PULLING IN DIRECT TENSION UNTIL MAJOR SLIP OCCURRED. FIVE FAYING SURFACES WERE USED IN THE TESTS: CLEAN AS-ROLLED MILL SCALE, WEATHERED MILL SCALE, BLAST CLEANED SURFACE, BLAST CLEANED AND COATED WITH INORGANIC ZINC SILICATE, AND VINYL COATED. SIXTEEN TESTS WERE CONTEMPLATED FOR EACH CONDITION WHICH INCLUDED FOUR TESTS OF JOINTS FASTENED WITH HIGH- STRENGTH BOLTS AS CONTROL SPECIMENS AND TWELVE TEST JOINTS FASTENED WITH HUCKBOLT FASTENERS. OF THE TWELVE, SIX WERE TESTED SOON AFTER ASSEMBLY, AND SIX WERE TESTED SIX WEEKS AFTER ASSEMBLY. JOINTS FASTENED WITH HUCKBOLTS EXHIBITED AS GOOD OR BETTER SLIP RESISTANCE THAN JOINTS FASTENED WITH HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS. THERE WAS A SLIGHT REDUCTION IN THE AVERAGE SLIP RESISTANCE OF JOINTS FASTENED WITH HUCKBOLTS SIX WEEKS PRIOR TO TESTING COMPARED WITH JOINTS ASSEMBLED JUST PRIOR TO TESTING. SLIP RESISTANCE OF JOINTS WITH WEATHERED FAYING SURFACES WAS USUALLY GREATER THAN JOINTS WITH AS-ROLLED MILL SCALE; THE SLIP RESISTANCE OF WEATHERED SURFACES SHOWED WIDER SCATTER. CLEAN METAL EXHIBITED LARGER SLIP RESISTANCE THAN MILL SCALE - THIS WAS INCREASED BY INORGANIC ZINC COATING. VINYL COATING SHARPLY DECREASED SLIP RESISTANCE OF THE CLEANED METAL FAYING SURFACE. /AUTHOR/
