A floating breakwater has been developed by the Transport Structures Division of TsNIIS. This breakwater uses a grill-type damper, thereby reducing anchoring forces. It can protect marine construction equipment and provide temporary erosion protection for beaches. Each section includes surface dampers, conical pontoons, stabilizers, deflectors, longitudinal connections, an anchoring system and intersectional hinges. Design parameters were optimized and dynamics analyzed in wave tank studies. The degree of damping was found to depend on the breakwater width along the wave path L in respect to the wave length l. For 60--70 percent damping, L must be (0.85--1.0) l. Comparative studies show that this breakwater provides better damping than thin stabilized breakwaters at wave steepness (h/l) up to 1/15, and that it sustains lower anchor forces in all cases. An experimental three-section breakwater with an L = 12.2 m and a length of 17.3 m was tested in three situations, with measurements of wave heights and of anchor forces taken into account. Results showed that a parabolic zone of 60-70 percent of damping extends 3L to the rear of the breakwater which is most effective inside the surfline. This breakwater is mobile, has floodable pontoons, weights 1.1 T/running ft, and is moored with standard anchors. The design can be modified to provide 70 percent damping for waves of h = 2m and h/l greater than 1/15, or for h = 5m and h/l = 1/20.
