INTERACTIVE MAPPING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS

A PROGRAM CALLED INSIGHT (INTERACTIVE SYSTEM FOR INVESTIGATION BY GRAPHICS OF HYDROLOGICAL TRENDS) HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WHICH RELIES ON GRAPHICAL DISPLAY TECHNIQUES FOR THE INTERROGATION OF A LARGE DATA BASE OF WATER QUALITY INFORMATION. A STORAGE TUBE TERMINAL CONNECTED TO A TIME SHARING COMPUTER IS USED TO DISPLAY THE LOCATIONS OF SELECTED WATER QUALITY MONITORING STATIONS, SUPERIMPOSED ON A BACKGROUND OF SURROUNDING GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES. THE USER CAN MANIPULATE THIS MAP BACKGROUND IN A VARIETY OF WAYS AND ASK FOR BOTH A TABULAR AND GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION OF DATA FOR WATER QUALITY PARAMETERS WHICH HAVE BEEN MEASURED AT ANY STATION. COMPLEX DATA INTERRELATIONSHIPS AND TRENDS, WHICH ARE OFTEN HIDDEN IN LARGE DATA BASES, CAN BE QUICKLY DISCOVERED BY GRAPHICAL INTERROGATION. /AUTHOR/
