TRILATERATION WITH SHORT RANGE EDM EQUIPMENT AND COMPARISON WITH TRIANGULATION

NUMEROUS DISTANCES AND ANGLES HAVE BEEN OBSERVED ON A SMALL SCALE HORIZONTAL CONTROL NETWORK. THE DISTANCES WERE MEASURED BY THE AUTHORS USING A HEWLETT PACKARD 3800 DISTANCE METER AND THE ANGLES WERE MEASURED BY STUDENTS AS A PART OF AN EDUCATIONAL PROJECT IN TRIANGULATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN. A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT LEAST SQUARES ADJUSTMENTS WERE PERFORMED ON THE DATA, AND THESE INCLUDED PURE TRILATERATION, PURE TRIANGULATION, AND ADJUSTMENTS WHICH COMBINED BOTH ANGLE AND DISTANCE OBSERVATIONS. THE RESULTS OF THE VARIOUS ADJUSTMENTS ARE DISCUSSED AND SOME COMPARISONS ARE MADE BETWEEN THE VARIOUS METHODS OF CONTROL SURVEYING. /AUTHOR/
