MEASURING TRUCK FREIGHT IN THE TRI-STATE REGION

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE METHODS OF MEASURING REGIONAL FREIGHT TRANSPORT IN THE TRI-STATE REGION, WHICH COVERS 22 COUNTIES IN NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY AND SIX PLANNING REGIONS IN SOUTHWEST CONNECTICUT. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL TRUCK SURVEYS WERE CONDUCTED AND THE THREE TYPES OF FREIGHT MOVEMENT ANALYSED-INTERNAL, INBOUND AND OUTBOUND-WERE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO COMMODITIES CARRIED. TABLES SHOW THE PERCENTAGE DISTRIBUTION OF TONNAGE BY INDUSTRY: INTERNAL VERSUS INTERCITY FREIGHT, THE ANNUAL TONNAGE GENERATED: AVERAGE WEIGHT OF CONSIGNMENT BY COUNTY, SELECTED COMMODITY GROUPS VERSUS LENGTH OF HAUL, LOAD CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUCK FREIGHT, COMMON CARRIER MULTIPLE SHIPMENT LOADS IN INTERCITY TRAFFIC, MULTI-STOP TONNAGE AS A PERCENTAGE OF TOTAL, PERCENTAGE DISTRIBUTION BY AXLE CLASS AND BY BODY TYPE, ETC.
