STANDARD CODING SYSTEMS FOR DATA EXCHANGE--TUTORIAL SESSION "B"

TO ACHIEVE EFFECTIVE USE OF THE COMPUTER AS A MANAGEMENT TOOL IN ADMINISTERING TRANSPORTATION/DISTRIBUTION FUNCTIONS NECESSITATES THE IMPLEMENTATION OF STANDARDIZED CODES. THEY WILL BE LIKE A COMMON LANGUAGE BETWEEN TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRIES AND THE COMPUTER. THIS PRINCIPLE HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED FOR A FEW YEARS YET LITTLE HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT. THE STEPS THAT HAVE BEEN TAKEN INCLUDES A REVISED STANDARD NUMBERING SYSTEM FOR MOTER CARRIER TARIFFS COMPATIBLE WITH COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN AUTHORIZED BY THE ICC AND A STANDARD POINT LOCATION CODE COUNCIL HAS BEEN SET UP TO DEAL WITH GEOGRAPHICAL IDENTIFICATION. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE MUST INCLUDE SELLING THE IDEA TO MANAGEMENT PEOPLE IN OTHER FIELDS BESIDES TRANSPORTATION.
