LOGISTICS--COMPUTER CONTROL AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS

TO ASSIST MANAGEMENT AND OPERATING PERSONNEL IN THE PRODUCTION SCHEDULING, DISTRIBUTION, AND TRANSPORTATION OF FINISHED AUTOMOBILES AND TRUCKS, GENERAL MOTORS HAS DEVELOPED A NUMBER OF INDEPENDENT BUT INTERSECTING COMPUTER PROGRAMS. TWO OF THESE PROGRAMS OPERATE WITHIN THE TRANSPORTATION SEGMENT OF THE PROCESS AND EXCHANGES LARGE VOLUMES OF DATA WITH CARRIERS ON A COMPUTER-TO-COMPUTER BASIS OVER TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH LINES. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE RAIL CAR CONTROL SYSTEM IS TO PROVIDE OPERATING PERSONNEL WITH INFORMATION TO ASSIST IN THE DAILY CONTROL OF RAIL CARS AND TO PROVIDE MANAGEMENT WITH RAIL TRANSPORTATION PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS. THE PRIMARY OF THE EVENT PROCESSING SYSTEM IS TO PROVIDE TRUCKAWAY CARRIERS WITH ADVANCE DATA ON VEHICLES, AND TO RECORD THE MOVEMENT OF INDIVIDUAL VEHICLES FOR MEASUREMENT OF THE TRANSPORTATION PROCESS. THESE TWO PROGRAMS ARE DESCRIBED, AS IS THE COMMUNICATIONS/COMPUTER NETWORK AND STANDARDS USED TO INTERFACE THE MULTITUDE OF RAIL AND TRUCKAWAY CARRIERS.
