SUMMARY OF SELECTED EFFECTS OF PROPOSED OR ANTICIPATED REGULATORY ACTIONS

THIS CHAPTER ATTEMPTS TO SUMMARIZE SOME OF THE SELECTED EFFECT OF PROPOSED OR ANTICIPATED REGULATORY ACTIONS ON THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY. IN PARTICULAR, THE PROBABLE COST OF CURRENTLY KNOWN OR ANTICIPATED REGULATORY ACTIONS ARE CONSIDERED. A DISCUSSION FOLLOWS WITH RESPECT TO THE NEED FOR MORE CAREFUL AGENCY CONSIDERATION OF PERFORMANCE REGULATIONS. THE TIMING OF THE REGULATORY CYCLE AS IT AFFECTS THE COST TO THE CONSUMER AND AS IT INTERACTS ON THE NET COST BENEFIT IS ALSO CONSIDERED. A NEW AREA OF POTENTIAL REGULATORY ACTION, AUTOMOTIVE NOISE ABATEMENT, IS OUTLINED; THE COSTS AND BENEFITS WHICH MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH SUCH ACTIONS ARE DISCUSSED. INTERNATIONAL ASPECTS OF THE REGULATORY PROCEDURE ARE CONSIDERED.
