THE STANDARDIZATION OF SHORT DISTANCE PUBLIC PASSENGER TRANSPORT /IN ITALIAN/

SHORT DISTANCE PUBLIC TRANSPORT HAS BEEN DECREASING IN WEST GERMANY, RESULTING IN A FINANCIAL LOSS FOR WHICH AN INCREASE IN TARIFFS HAS FAILED TO COMPENSATE. AN EXAMINATION OF THE ECONOMICS OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT UNDERTAKINGS SHOWS THAT A REDUCTION IN PRODUCTION AND OPERATION COSTS WAS NECESSARY TO MAKE PUBLIC PASSENGER TRANSPORT COMPETITIVE WITH THE INCREASING USE OF THE PRIVATE CAR FOR SHORT DISTANCES. SOME SOLUTIONS ADOPTED IN WEST GERMANY TO IMPROVE SERVICES AND REDUCE COSTS IN THIS SECTOR ARE DISCUSSED. /TRRL/
