SIMULATION STUDIES OF MANUAL CONTROL OF SHIPS IN LOW SPEED OFFSHORE OPERATIONS

A simulation study is described for evaluating the effectiveness of a human operator with purely manual control, as well as manual control augmented by a semi-automatic control, for the purpose of maintaining a ship along a desired route at sea by means of two rotatable thrusters. The particular application for the study is ocean mining. The paper describes the techniques used in such simulation studies, including disturbance representations, computer implementation of manual and semi-automatic control in a real time simulation.
