SCALING RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE IMPROVED THROUGH SILICONES

SCALING RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE IS AFFECTED BY LENGTH OF CURING OR AGING. A BRIEF REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE THEORY AND MECHANISM OF SCALING. INVESTIGATIONS HAVE REVEALED THAT SIZE AND SPACING OF AIR VOIDS AS WELL AS QUANTITY OF ENTRAINED AIR ARE IMPORTANT FACTORS IN THE FROST AND SCALING RESISTANCE DEVELOPED BY AIR ENTRAINMENT IN CONCRETE. AGE AND MOISTURE LOSS OF CONCRETE HAVE A BEARING ON ITS SCALING RESISTANCE. IT IS FAIRLY WELL ESTABLISHED THAT THE TYPE OF AIR ENTRAINING AGENT USED CONTROLS BUBBLE SIZE AND SPACING FOR A GIVEN PERCENTAGE OF AIR IN CONCRETE AND THAT LARGE AIR BUBBLES WIDELY SPACED DO NOT GIVE SATISFACTORY FROST AND SCALING RESISTANCE. A SUITABLE SILICONE WATER REPELLENT FOR CONCRETE CAN HELP IF PROPERLY APPLIED. THE MECHANICS OF SILICONE PROTECTION ARE ANALYZED. A RATHER STRIKING DIFFERENCE IS NOTED IN DEPTH OF PENETRATION BETWEEN THE SOLVENT AND WATER SOLUBLE SILICONE SOLUTIONS AND THE OBVIOUS IMPORTANCE OF DEPTH OF PENETRATION TO EFFECTIVENESS AND LIFE OF THE SILICONE TREATMENT. DIFFERENCES IN SILICONE PENETRATION MAY BE ATTRIBUTABLE TO VARIATIONS IN THE SELECTIVE ABSORPTIVITY OF THE SILICONE RESINS PER SE - THE WATER SOLUBLE RESIN BEING A SODIUM RESINATE WITH A DIFFERENT MOLECULAR STRUCTURE THAN THE SOLVENT TYPE WHICH IS AN UNNEUTRALIZED RESIN, EITHER COMPLETELY OR PARTIALLY CONDENSED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT SILICONE WATER REPELLENTS HAVE ESTABLISHED THEMSELVES AS USEFUL TOOLS IN PROTECTING NEW AND OLD HIGHWAY CONCRETE.
