PORTRAYAL OF EARTH FEATURES WITH NASA PHOTOGRAPHY

WITH THE ADVENT OF GEMINI AND APOLLO PHOTOGRAPHY, ATTEMPTS TO REPRESENT THE EARTH'S ACTUAL APPEARANCE ON SMALL SCALE GRAPHICS HAVE CHALLENGED THE CARTOGRAPHER. THE CURRENT STATE OF SUCH PORTRAYAL ATTEMPTS ARE PRESENTED AND THEIR RESULTS ILLUSTRATED. TECHNIQUES USED IN TERRAIN REPRESENTATION ARE DISCUSSED AND ILLUSTRATED. DURING THE ACTUAL PREPARATION OF THE SHADED RELIEF, NASA PHOTOGRAPHY IS UTILIZED TO DEPICT PROMINENT OVERALL LAND FORMS AND TO ASSURE CONTINUITY OF APPEARANCE. IN ADDITION, PHOTOGRAPHY IS USED TO ARTISTICALLY ILLUSTRATE TERRAIN FEATURES NOT READILY APPARENT ON SMALL SCALE MAP SOURCE. ITEMS SUCH AS FAULTS, ESCARPMENTS AND TILTED PLATEAUS, WHICH ARE NOT EASILY DEFINED IN THE CONTOUR DELINEATIONS, CAN BE PORTRAYED. /AUTHOR/
