IMAGE-SPACE PLOTTER

A NEW STEREOPLOTTING INSTRUMENT CONCEPT IS BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE THAT STEREO IMAGE DATA CAN BE SELECTED INDEPENDENT OF THE POSITIONING PROCESS. THIS IS IN CONTRAST TO PRESENT STEREOPLOTTERS WHICH AUTOMATICALLY POSITION THE IMAGE DATA AS AN OPERATOR SELECTS IT. THE NEW CONCEPT PROVIDES GREAT FLEXIBILITY IN THE PLOTTING SEQUENCE. OTHER POTENTIAL ADVANTAGES INCLUDE COST, VERSATILITY, PORTABILITY, AND EASE OF OPERATION. IN ONE REALIZATION OF THE CONCEPT, AN INEXPENSIVE VIEWER-RECORDER WOULD BE USED TO STEREOSCOPICALLY SELECT IMAGE DATA OF INTEREST. THE CONJUGATE IMAGE COORDINATES OF THE SELECTED DATA WOULD BE DIGITALLY RECORDED. AFTER ALL SELECTION IS COMPLETED, THE DIGITAL RECORD WOULD BE PROCESSED USING A GENERAL-PURPOSE COMPUTER TO CALCULATE THE POSITION IN OBJECT SPACE OF EACH RECORDED DATA POINT. FINAL OUTPUT COULD BE IN GRAPHIC OR DIGITAL FORM. LITTLE PHOTOGRAMMETRIC KNOWLEDGE WOULD BE NEEDED FOR OPERATION. ANY STEREO IMAGE GEOMETRY WHICH CAN BE DESCRIBED MATHEMATICALLY AND WHICH PROVIDES AT LEAST LOCAL STEREO PERCEPTION COULD BE PLOTTED WITH AN INSTRUMENT USING THE CONCEPT. /AUTHOR/
