QUANTITATIVE MAPPING: SOME THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS

IN THE PROCESS OF MAPPING, STATISTICAL DISTRIBUTIONS UNDERGO SEVERAL TRANSFORMATIONS. THESE TRANSFORMATIONS AFFECT THE LOOK OF MAPS AND HENCE, THE READER'S IMPRESSION OF THE DISTRIBUTIONS. THE SYSTEM OF TRANSFORMATIONS IS EXAMINED RELATIVE TO CHOROPLETH MAPS MADE FOR COMMUNICATING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PAIRS OF DENSITY DISTRIBUTIONS. THIS SYSTEM FORMS A FRAMEWORK UPON WHICH TO CONSIDER THE QUESTION OF THE ACCURACY OF READERS' IMPRESSIONS OF MAP CORRELATION. /AUTHOR/
